Black Soap=Happy Skin!

22 Dec

As a long time suffer of acne I have tried everything.  And by everything, I mean everything.  To know the total amount of money I have poured into perscription and over the counter products would send me over the edge!  While I feel fortunate that my acne is not as bad as it could be, it is still irritating and needs to vanish.  I have had acne since I was in high school, and it has slowly gotten worse as I have entered my mid twenties.  I have been through prescription pills and topical treatments, only to be left with insanely dry acne ridden skin.  I’ve used ProActive, and Murad with no luck.  While I did see a small improvement at first with Murad, after a couple of weeks my breakouts returned in full force.  I also saw minor improvements with Burts Bee’s acne line, but not enough to continue to use it after three months.  Other treatments I have tried were Hibiclense (antibacterial), zeno hot spot, Neutrogena Skin I.D., noxema, Aveno, Boots acne line, birth control, and the list could go on, and on.

For about a month now I have been using only black soap, and a natural astringent made of water and tea tree oil on my face.  The results have been slow coming but I really am noticing an over all improvement in my skin!  These products have left my skin a lot less oily, without completely over drying my skin.  The tone and color of my face seems a lot better, and the few blemishes I am getting are not nearly as bad as they usually are.  My pores appear to be much smaller, and a lot of the black heads I had have vanished.  I also use this on my back, as I tend to break out there every so often as well.  This is also a regimen you can use with confidence, as it is all natural!  No funky ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Black soap (also goes by African black soap, raw shae soap) is an all natural soap high in glycerin that also contains  coconut oil, cocoa, aloe, plantain peel ash (where it gets the dark color), and palm kernel oil.  It is packed with vitamins A & E, tocopherols and tocotrienol which protect skin cells against environmental damage, lauric acid which helps kill bacteria, and cinnamic acid from the shea butter that acts as a UV protectant.  The shae, aloe, and vitamin E are super moisterizing to the skin.

Vegas Wedding: In the Works!

21 Dec

After recently getting engaged, my fiance and I both opted for a small, none traditional wedding.  Great to say our first thought that came to mind was VEGAS!  Plans are coming together quite nicely if I might say so myself, and the stress level has been kept to a minimum.  We are inviting close friends and family only, and will be saying our vows at the Shalimar Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Accomplishments thus far have included getting out invitations, booking hotel and airfare, booking the chapel, getting my dress, and a restaurant for after the ceremony.  Coming soon will be snapshot play by plays of my planning process, and hopefully progress as my date of March, 22nd 2013 creeps closer.  I have done my fair share of blog reading; on weddings, Vegas weddings, dresses, destination weddings, etc., as I am not your typical bride, when I did find a blog with good info I was more than pleased.  My taste is different, and definitely not every ones cup of tea, but here it shall be for those of you whose cup of tea it might be!  Keep an eye out, as Vegas Wedding: Part 1 will be published soon!

Make Up Picks: Roaring 20’s

21 Dec
Modern Victorian

This is how you make tons of eye make up look good! Too faced makes some great eye shadows in pigments that are rich, and stay put. Maybellines Lash Stilleto/High Heel mascaras add a lot of shine and length to lashes, and Avons pencil liners lay down a lot of color without the smudge. Some of my favorites for dark lips are lip stains, and Revlon Just Bitten lip stain comes in great colors. For a flawless, shine free face try Rimmels Stay Matte powder. Top off your look with a light pink blush to the apples of your cheek!

When to Save, and When to Splurge!

21 Dec

Being a make up obsessed beauty product fiend is hard on the wallet! I’ve tried it all, generic, brand name, high-end, low-end, and everything in between when it comes to cosmetics, hair products, and beauty supplies, and to a certain extent, the ‘you get what you pay for saying’ is true. Here are my top 10 picks of when to splurge, and when to save. There are some things where spending the extra cash really makes a difference, and some things where the cheaper product is WAY better than the expensive one. What to save on(clockwise from top): Moisturizer. Now I am someone with some finicky skin. It’s ‘combination’ to the extreme. I have tried almost all facial regimens, and have really been impressed with Boots Expert Hydrating Serum. It’s made for sensitive skin; no fragrance, no dyes. It also packs the power of a super moisturizer without feeling heavy, and definitely not greasy! Available at Target for $7.49. Next up is one of my most favorite products in my make up arsenal, Hard Candy Glamoflauge concealer. This stuff covers like none other, and is especially great for hiding under eye circles. A little bit goes a LONG ways with his stuff. Glamoflauge can be bought at walmart for about $6.00. The next product goes great with the Glamoflauge concealer, Physicians Formula correcting powder does juts that, corrects. For any one who has uneven skin tone, or redness this stuff is a miracle, and can be picked up for $12.00. It hides everything, and feels super light on your skin. It has yellow, green, pink, and tan to counteract all of your skins imperfections. For those who hate having to re apply lip color a million times a day will love Maybellines 24 hour lip color. One end is your color, it’s super thin but deposits great color onto your lips. At first it may feel a little sticky, but it then dries into a weightless matte finish. The other end of the product is a clear moisturizer that seals in the color and leaves lips super soft. Add this to your collection for about $11.oo at most any store that caries make up. Next is Soap and Glory’s Sexy Mother Pucker lip plumping gloss. I have honestly tried probably 99% of lip plumping glosses out there and this one is the best by far. It smells great, and is actually really moisturizing, great gloss for $13.00. Last is Tresemme’s 24 hour body hairspray. I have never been fan of Tresemme’s product, especially their hairspray. This one actually is lightweight, and super dry. definitely a great deal for $4.00!! Available at Target, Walmart, and any place Tresemme products are sold.

What to splurge on: Bumble and Bumble hair products are insanely awesome (and insanely spendy!). The Deeep hair masque is the best intense treatment conditioner out there. This stuff turns straw to silk, and smells amazing. $25 Sephora. The lip stain crazy came back a couple of years ago, but Benefit has been making Benetint for a lot longer. This stuff leaves the PERFECT shade of red on either your cheeks, or lips. You can pick this up at Sephoa or department stores for about $25.00. I am sure you all have seen the infomercials for the Instyler straightening iron. While at first it is awkward to get used to, you will definatley be glad once you get comfortable using it. Instyler leaves hair super soft, shiny, and bouncy. It also seems to do a lot less damage than even your most expensive straighteners. $100 at Target and Walmart. I have been a huge fan of Too Faced eye shadows for a long time, pair it with Too Faced eye primer and you will have eyes that look like you just applied your make up minutes ago. Both available at Sephora, primer $18.00, and eyeshadow compact about $35.

Try it out ladies! See for yourself that there are products that are worth the money, and products that amaze you with their price!

All Natural Astringent

21 Dec

I have added this astringent to my daily routine and am really happy about the results. I have tried close to all of the facial products on the market for acne and this by far has given me the best results. Witch hazel is a natural astringent, and combined with the antiseptic qualities of tea tree oil, the two give you just what you’re looking for minus all the additives, preservatives, and irritants in other ‘astringents’ on the market. The purpose of an astringent is to shrink and constrict the tissue, so what do you need all the other junk for that is in any bottle of astringent you have purchased at the store? What you will need is 1 bottle of witch hazel, found otc at any pharmacy, or stores like Walmart and Target. You can also find tea tree oil there. I mix 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil into 1 bottle (16 ounces) of witch hazel. Applied topically with a cotton ball at night, this stuff definitely beats any manufactured product. And it is 100% natural, so give it a try, and see for yourself!

3 Products for Perfect Brows

21 Dec

Yup…. just 3 (for those of us who weren’t born with naturally gorgeous brows). Most important tool: a good tweezer!! My favorite, and I have tried them all, is Tweezermans needle nose tweezers. No hair can escape its grip and precision, making plucking easy and painless. The next best product is a good eye brow liner. Maybelline makes a great line, it’s small and thin, and has a more waxy feel. This makes it wear better than an actual pencil liner (stays put). To top everything off, you need a good wax and powder. A powder to fill in your eyebrows, and blend, and a wax to keep them in perfect place!

Curves Ahead!

21 Dec

What real women look like!!

Ladies… we were born with curves for a reason. While some of us are just naturally slender, we were born to have a little extra cushion in certain places for biological reasons (babies and all). Having a six-pack is not my idea of healthy, being bony definitely not my idea of healthy. Work those curves ladies…a little inspiration 🙂 You don’t have to have your numbers fit on a chart, but you should be the best ‘you’ you can be ❤

Help for some seriously fried locks!

21 Dec

A couple of weeks ago I had a pretty bad hair mis-hap. Not reading he box, and looking into what the product really was (chemical hair straightener), I picked up Suaves new Keratin Infusion treatment, and gave it a whirl. Keratin is good stuff, right? Yes, it is what covers the outside of our entire bodies, the basic structure of our hair, and nails. So WHY on earth would a product with Keratin in it NOT be good?! Because it’s straight up chemical hair relaxer probably not even good for people with ethnic hair. Whatever you do, do not, I repeat, DO NOT use Suaves Keratin Infusion treatment. Why should you not do this? It will melt your hair off. The directions indicated I should leave it on for 20 minutes, it was on my hair for about 8 before I washed it out, and I ended up with mushy melted hair, that if I would have pulled on it, would have snapped off without hesitation. It was so bad, I could not even get it to dry. Those of you who do hair, or are very familiar with hair know this is bad. Those of you who aren’t familiar do not even want to know; it is a hair catastrophe. recommendations from stylist and salons? Chop it off, there is no saving it (which was not an acceptable answer for me!).

I have long loved Bumble and Bumble products. Though they are pretty spendy, their products work miracles on hair. I had not yet used their Mending line of products until it was absolutely necessary, but within two weeks it has done some serious damage control on my hair that was on the verge if falling out/melting off!! While it’s not 100% yet, and won’t be until it grows out and I can trim the damaged bits off slowly, it is now salvageable hair that can be dried and styled. This stuff is freaking amazing….

Bumble and Bumble Mending products are the sh*t ❤
